It seems everybody has a reason to use the Internet and writers are no exception. In fact, the Internet is a resource that once explored, most writers couldn't do without.
Let's take a look at why.
1. Research
This one's almost too obvious to mention but nevertheless, it's the number one reason why a freelancer would use the Net.
While most writers still build up their own library of reference books, without the Internet we'd still be scurrying off to the public library in the hope that they'd have a book about "coinage in ancient Egypt" or "the architect who designed the fountains at Trafalgar Square." Pretty obscure subjects and the likelihood of the library having anything on their shelves was pretty remote. They could probably order something that might help but that could take anything up to a month to arrive.
But now we have the Internet! Tra-la! A few simples keystrokes and up it comes. I now know that coins in ancient Egypt can be traced back to the late dynastic period and that the fountains of Trafalgar Square were designed by Sir Charles Barry. How much easier things are today!
The meanings of names, weights and measures, sunrise times around the world, world Royalty throughout history, how long it takes to drive from Chicago to Los Angeles and what food you're likely to be served in Botswana, all the information's out there just waiting for you to need it.
2. Find Work
While it's still usual to pitch ideas to magazine and newspaper editors and send manuscripts as hardcopy, the Internet has opened up a whole city of avenues for writers.
There are websites specifically designed to help freelancers find work (or project owners find freelancers, depending on how you look at it), and online magazines are often looking for writers who can submit professional content to their sites.
By joining a handful of well-chosen freelance forums, you'll soon discover where to look for work and which markets pay best.
3. Join Support Groups & Communities
Writing is a notoriously lonely profession.
Almost all freelancers work from home and therefore don't have the opportunity to network with others in their profession.
By joining online support groups and communities, freelancers can alleviate some of that loneliness.
Being able to exchange ideas and thoughts with others who know exactly where you're coming from can help a writer get through the day without clawing at the walls too often.
Online communities are also great sources of information that you may otherwise have missed. New markets and new research resources are often discussed and the budding freelancer will be given far more advice from those who've made all the mistakes already, than any book could ever offer.
Local groups sometimes arrange social meets, too. What could be better than lunch with other writers when you've been pulling your hair out because your friends just don't understand that putting words on paper really isn't as easy as it looks.

4. Polish Up Your Langauge Skills
"Their," "there," or "they're"? Or was it "lay" or "lie"? Or possibly even "too," "two," or "to."
And where does that semicolon belong? Oops, it seems I started that sentence with a conjunction. Am I allowed to do that? No? Well I just did! Surely writers can break the rules sometimes, can't they?
The Internet is bursting at the seams with sites designed to help improve your writing.
It doesn't matter how good you think your langauge skills are, it's always worth testing yourself now and then just to make sure you're still on top of things.
I know I'm a sucker for the comma. They slip in all over the shop and lead to wasted time while I go through my work, whipping them out again. And I'm not alone. Most of us have a little "something" that's peculiar to us. As long as we're aware of it things aren't too bad, but what if you have some little "distinguishing feature" that you don't know about? You wouldn't want to be sending your work off to editors with commas hooked here, there and everywhere, would you?
Some langauge improvement sites send out regular newsletters that are worth subscribing to. I receive a couple every week and am surprised at just how much I've picked up.
5. Develop A Portfolio
A website is pretty much a necessity for freelancers these days and luckily, they aren't difficult to build.
Your website should give prospective clients information about your background including any relevant education or employment, a bit about who you are and why you write, what your goals are and your areas of expertise. Some freelancers list their basic prices on their websites while others choose not to.
A "clip file" is a must on the website. No matter how much you write about yourself, if you really want to sell yourself you need to give visitors the chance to access a cross-section of your past work.
To get a good idea of what's needed, take a look at other freelancer's sites. Those who have been around for a while have neatly laid out sites that work hard for them. Make sure yours works hard for you, too!
6. Read "How To" Articles
Thousands of freelance writers have posted articles on the Net giving advice to others, whether seasoned writers who are perhaps moving in new directions or newcomers who still have lots to learn about all aspects of the profession.
All sorts of subjects are covered from how to find markets and which topics are most likely to sell to the basics of bookkeeping and how to make uninvited guests understand that you're working even though you're at home.
If you're just starting out as a freelancer, I'd suggest reading at least one "how to" article every day. Believe me, there's far more to learn than you imagine!
7. Keep In Touch
Editors and other project owners are keen to use email as a means of communication so it's worth having a mail account that you can easily access from wherever you happen to be.
Free accounts such as hotmail, Yahoo and gmail are all handy for people on the move because you can log in to check your messages from Internet cafes, libraries and friends' houses.
If you're busy working on a project, you might find that the client wants to keep in touch via one of the instant messaging systems that are available these days. MSN, Yahoo messenger and AOL instant messenger are the most popular for this use.
Use email to contact your existing clients regularly. As with any other business, it's important to remind them of your services and perhaps offer a discount now and then.
8. Take Payments
Quite often you'll find clients will want to either transfer money directly to your bank account or use an online payment service such as PayPal (www.paypal.com).
If your client transfers money directly to you, checking your account for payments is easy when you have access through the Internet. Just log into your bank and list recent transactions. If the payments been made, you can update your accounts accordingly and know that you can happily work for the client again as nothing's outstanding on his account.
If a client wants to pay via PayPal or another online system for transferring money, you can send an invoice directly through the service and receive an email when the money's received. From there you can either transfer it to your bank account or leave it to accumulate on the Internet account.
If you're planning to use the Internet freelance sites to find work, then a PayPal account is an absolute must. The same goes for some content sites.
In other words, if you want to maximise your earnings, get a PayPal account and do your banking online.

I honestly can't imagine how a freelance writer can manage these days without regular access to the Internet.
Searching the Net will never be the same as browsing the shelves of a library and I suggest you continue using whatever resources your local community has to offer. But for the sake of convenience, the Internet simply can't be beaten.

These mice feature a hard ball on the underside that rolls as the mouse is moved, and rollers inside the mouse allow the physical motion to be translated to the pointer on the screen. Some “ball mice†are a bit more advanced and replace the internal rollers with optical sensors, but the same principle applies.
Mechanical mice require occasional maintenance to keep the ball and rollers free of lint and other debris, and with numerous moving parts there is always a potential for problems. The use of a mouse pad is recommended for these mice as they not only provide a clean surface to work on, but also provide the needed resistance for the ball to roll smoothly.
The precision of mechanical mice is not particularly good, and although they may be fine for typical desktop work, they were never quite up to the task of detailed graphics work or serious game playing.
Optical mice - Optical mice replace the whole ball/roller assembly of mechanical mice with a beam of a light and an optical sensor. The beam of light shines down on the surface below the mouse and the sensor uses the light to track the movement. Optical mice have several advantages over mechanical mice. There are no moving parts to break or otherwise cause problems. Although mice generally aren't heavy, the elimination of the ball and roller mechanism allows an optical mouse to be much lighter than a comparable mechanical mouse. Laser mice - Laser technology is the latest and greatest in computer mice tracking, and takes the advantages of optical to a new level. Most of the attributes of a laser mouse have been described in the optical mouse section, except for one. Instead of a fairly wide beam of light, it uses an extremely narrow beam of laser light.
The Logitech MX1000 laser mouse may be the mouse for you if you are looking for extreme precision. According to Logitech, the laser technology used in the MX1000 provides up to “20x more sensitivity to surface detail—or tracking power—than optical.â€
Hard Wired Connection Technologies
Serial – Serial mice are fairly difficult to come by these days, as are the ports they need in order to operate. This technology is quite old and slow, and the popularity and convenience of USB has all but eliminated the need for this interface on your typical PC. But, there were mice that sported the 9-pin connection needed to connect to a serial port, and many PS2 mice used to include an adaptor for Serial ports.
PS2 - PS2 mice were the standard for a long time, as all motherboards provided two PS2 ports for connecting a keyboard and a mouse. USB technology has become so widely used that the slower and less convenient PS2 ports are on the verge of extinction with the Serial port. That said, not many mice are still sold that only support a PS2 connection, but there are still some available.
USB – Most mice can now connect via USB, and include an adaptor to be used on a PS2 port, as well. It seems that just about any mouse now uses USB to connect, whether it is a wired mouse, or any variety of wireless mice that we are about to look at.
Wireless Connection Technologies
Radio Frequency – The most common type of wireless mouse uses radio frequencies to communicate motion to a receiver that is connected to the PC. This generic wireless mouse (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=RF-M308-RC-USB&cat=MOU) operates on the 27MHz frequency and the mouse itself is powered by AAA batteries which are not included. As you move up the price scale of RF (Radio Frequency) wireless mice, the packages will generally include an integrated rechargeable battery, as does the Logitech MX1000 discussed previously. Other features of higher end RF wireless mice include extended range, greater precision, and a receiver that doubles as a battery charger.
Bluetooth – The Tech Tip on Bluetooth discussed the basics of this wireless technology, and how it was a good fit for ‘lower speed' devices, like a mouse. Logitech and IOGear are two manufacturers offering products for Bluetooth users, in addition to more traditional mice. The Bluetooth mice are also battery powered, and use the 2.4GHz radio frequency to communicate with an included receiver/charger or other Bluetooth adaptor.
RFID – A truly unique approach to wireless mice has been developed by a company called A4Tech. The A4Tech ND-30 RFID wireless mouse must be used with the included mouse pad in order to function, but there are no batteries in the mouse, and no cords on the mouse to get in the way. It works by using electro magnetic induction between the pad (which is plugged into a USB port) and the wireless, non-powered mouse. You never have to worry about replacing / charging batteries, and the weight of the mouse is greatly reduced since the power features are no longer necessary.
Features
Buttons – Most mice (except for a Macintoch's) include at least two buttons. The use of these is fairly well understood, but other buttons may be featured on a mouse to further simplify common tasks. The Logitech MX 510 mouse features a total of 8 buttons which can be programmed to execute functions of the user's choosing.
Scroll wheels – Many mice now include a scroll wheel between the two main buttons which serves to allow up/down scrolling of documents and web pages. The scroll wheel may also serves as a third button on some mice, and clicking the scroll wheel will activate commands in many applications. More advanced scroll wheels are found on some mice that allow for left to right scrolling, which may be useful on a wide spreadsheet or large image.
Extra features – Many mice provide more than the basic functionality we have come to expect. Some provide a reduced foot print in order to make them more portable for use with a notebook computer. Some are designed for multi-tasking and provide an integrated flash memory card reader. Then, there are others that just look cool with a bit of a light show, or that actually keep you cool by including a small fan in the palm rest area.

Economies all over the world are experiencing a decline, businesses are laying off many people in order to cut costs and stay profitable. Those who retain their jobs are faced with rocketing food and gas prices.
When you are an owner of a small business, the challenges are even greater, under the circumstances, you are more likely to experience a decline in traffic to your store, raising costs of supplies, employees demanding (understandably) higher wages, higher fees in marketing your business using mainstream media, higher costs in renting business space and insurance costs. If you are an accountant you might have probably figured that under this circumstances, unless you are selling magic items, you would see higher expenses than income. Business is not about how much money you make, but it is more about how much of the money you make actually stays in the business. A business that makes a million a year and spends a million is the same as the business that does not do business at all, except in the earlier case, the owner is actually at a loss because they are putting in more effort than they are making.
So how do you survive that? That was exactly the same question I asked myself a few months ago. Here I have compiled some notes that some in the same situation as I was might find helpful.
1 Constant Evaluation and process streamlining.
Constant evaluation is the blood and soul of every business. As the saying goes “What got you to where you are may not be able to get you where you want to beâ€. To be honest, I have never met any business person, whether it is in the formal or informal sector who wanted their business to stay the same for a long period of time, no matter how well they were doing. Being on top of your class does not stop your competitors from doing what it takes to beat you. We see a lot of big businesses laying people off, going through mergers and acquisition. This is process streamlining on a large scale. They evaluate their positions, get rid of inefficient processes, redundant positions and so on. Don't feel guilty if you have to do it for your small business… If you find yourself with more employees than you need or using a process that is costing you more than it brings in, cut it off and replace it with something that works better.
I will tell you a secret. A few years ago, I read an article about how one could make a lot of money on FOREX, if you do not know what it is, basically the business is about speculating on whether a certain currency's value would get stronger or weaker and then you would either buy or sell a specific currency in exchange for another currency.
I thought that was a pretty easy thing to do and got a lot of books telling me that it is a lucrative business. I am not disputing that, but there are also a lot of people that loose money this way. I also got a few articles somewhere that warned me about what happens on FOREX, but at the same time I was getting drawn to it, not by the money but by the fact that I could learn a lot about financial discipline.
After two months, I had almost lost all that I had in my account, but I had also learned a lot of things. One of the important lessons is to cut your losses short and let your profits run. Get me right, this is not the same as giving up too soon. This is giving up soon after knowing that the business is heading nowhere. This may sound like a greedy game, but it works. To me money not spend is money saved, it is as simple as that.
Why am I telling you this? I am telling you this because A few years later I would start a small business that did not really fit my lifestyle but it had the potential to take off. I would spend most of my starting capital on advertising and rent and then on wages for my staff. Being what it was, the business was not generating enough revenue to cover its expenditure, because the marketing media and approaches we used were not working and were difficult to evaluate whether they were effective or not and given the my lifestyle, I was learning that there is no way I would be able to take the business to the next level using the resources I had. I had a choice to either wait and let it wipe me out of my hard-earned cash or cut my loses short and explore other alternatives.
By talking to other small business owners, I would find out that many were facing the same problem that I was. I then put some time aside and develop a web-based platform to sell my stuff. This was the birth of SME Promotions Portal, the idea was not only simple, but it also helped me cut my business expenses by more than 50%, I got rid of the rented space and let go of my staff who were bringing in much less than I was paying them. I get most consulting assignments through the site and have automated a lot of the processes behind my business dealings to save me time so that I can concentrate on what I do best.
This site is not only for me, other people have started using the site to sell their products for a small fee. Giving them an opportunity to only pay after their products are sold. How does that help? If you are in a situation that I was in, having to pay upfront for everything sucks up all your working capital and spoils your prospects and leaving your business with no cash to work with. This leaves the business with a little bit of money to spend on basic needs.

2 Break away from conventional marketing practices.
If you started a business the way I did then you would know about what I am about to say. Many people out there think having a business is about having merchandise in store and putting ads everywhere to let people know where to find you; or even worse hoping that people will easily come by your store looking for what you got.
Others spend most of their starting capital on radio and TV commercials like I did, when they know they have no way of measuring where the traffic is coming from, so that they can cut out stuff that is not working. The sad thing is that many advertisers out there do not care whether you get your returns out of your advertising dollar and honestly, they shouldn't, because they are in business to make money. Otherwise, how would you feel if somebody told you that every time you sold a frying pan to a family, you would have to follow them around to make sure they are using it. It is not your business, your business is selling frying pans and you should stick to that.
To make sure your business can survive, you have start talking to people you know and trust or people that trust you, about what you are offering. Do not try to push it on to them, just tell them know about it. Chances are, that next time they hear somebody looking for what you have, they would refer them to you. The idea is that the few that you know are going to tell a few others that they know and the game continues… viral marketing… if you get where I am heading. The best tool for viral marketing is word-of-mouth, you either learn to use it or loose business.
Save your marketing dollar, by cutting out all the stuff that does not work, the world is bombarded with marketing messages every second and many people are beginning to ignore marketers who interrupt them with a sales proposition. Watch your competitors see what they are doing wrong and learn from it.
My nephew Sylvester had just learned a hard lesson from interruptive marketing, we were distributing flyers about our business and most of the time he would get a mean look and be told that people did not have time for what he was trying to sell them. After going through the pile of flyers, we would sit and talk about how people are responding, why they are responding that way? and what we needed to do to overcome that?. Just make sure you do this all the time, otherwise you are going to waste a lot of your resources and not understand what is going on when they do not show up at your store.
If your business is too small, try online merchandising. You look for a cheaper way to sell your products on the Internet. This will cut your expenses in terms of rent, expensive advertising and even the commuting time as this will enable to work from home. Besides, you will be able to market to a wider Audience and do not have to be awake to take orders. This is not an easy cookie though, you will have to spend some time researching Internet marketing and optimizing your website for best results.
3 Help your customers find the help you do not offer.
Customers are very interesting people, one thing is that many of them do not want to be sold something. They want to buy something and hopefully from you. They tend to ask people they trust of their opinion on other businesses or even products.
No matter how much you hate your competitor or how desperate you need their dollar, if you do not have what they are looking for, politely tell them that you can not provide it and they should check with your competitor or some of your non competing partners for that matter. Never delay their purchase out of greed until you have the product to sell to them, leave that to them to decide.
Never bad-mouth a customer, even when you catch them buying the product you have from your competitor when you believe they should be buying from you. I have had someone from my household buy something I was selling from a competitor. I watched them do it and they later thought they should have bought from me. Whether out of guilt or something else, they told five of their friends that I had the product and all five bought from me. Had I reacted differently, the best case would have been that they would return the product to the store and buy from me and never bring anyone. The worst case would be not returning it, not referring anybody to me and decide not to ever talk to me. The funny thing about customers is that the more you help them, the more they get to trust you and they might even bring their friends to your business knowing that they will get help regardless of whether you have what they are looking for or not. Why is this important? People get to you first before they get to somebody else, thus you have a chance to sell them something first before your competitor.
4 Ask non-competing business owners for help and return the favor.
If you are to survive in business, you have to acquire some friends hopefully people that are already in business but are not your direct competitors. You should do this for a few reasons, one is that since you are not competitors, you are more likely to need what they offer and so are they. These people might end up being your biggest customers or they may even refer their customers to your business.
Two, Since they are already in business, it is very likely that you think the same way. This gives you an opportunity to pick their brains on something that you need help with. Remember for the most part, we are defined by who we associate with. If you hang around thieves, you will be considered a thieve; and if you hang around very successful people, you will be considered successful, as long as you work hard enough to think and behave like them, for them not to run away from you.
Three, people around you are watching even when you think they are not. What you say to one about other people may come to haunt you. If you have hanged around somebody that gossips a lot, would it not bother you as to what they say behind your back? Or rather as to what would stop them from saying about you what they say to you about others? The same thing happens in business, when things are not going well, you reach out to others for help. This almost always works as long as you remain accommodating about others reaching out to you. Keep what they tell you in confidence, confidential. This will earn you a good reputation, trust and in many cases new business or referrals.
5 Be Careful of hyped advertisers trying to take your last pennies.
How often do you see something like this? “Get ranked high on major search engines in 24 hours for a small fee†or rather an interesting one “Make up to $400 a day working at home using our proven system†and at the end of the page, they ask you to pay $300 to get you started.
These are all people wanting to get your money for their own benefit. First of all the web is full of people competing for the top ranking. Even if it was true that they would get you top ranking on Google or Yahoo, how long do you think you will stay there. Besides, these ads go to millions of people who maybe in the same business category that you are in, and just out of curiosity, how many millions would fit into Google or Yahoo's top 10 ranking?
I am not completely dismissing the fact that some of them may be good, but if you are going to give somebody your money to use an automated system to put you on these search engines, then you got to think twice, because some search engines may be smart enough to know these tricks. Besides, if Google and/or Yahoo gets their money from online advertising, would you not think that they would watch out for sneaky marketing approaches like this, using their space to make money from you?
Second, Have you ever looked for a job and your employer tells you to pay them first before they gave you the job? If they did then, I would question the legality of their business.
What I am saying here is that you do not have to jump at every marketing message you hear, which is very common when you are desperate to see your business idea take off; or even to simply put something on the table. So trade wise, learn a lot by reading a lot and let your business grow. If you are going to succeed with online marketing your keyword research has to be done by you, since you and only you knows what you would like to get out of it and how much you want to pay for it.
6 Combine forces and let your marketing dollar take you a little farther.
My seventh grade teacher once demonstrated to me how powerful you can be by combining forces with other people for greater results. This may have nothing to do with business, but just hear me out.
This guy had noticed that kids in his class were not getting along, so he decides he is going to make the class sing, but everyone singing a different song, then asked three students to stand outside the class, so that after the song, they would come back and report on what they got from the song. After the first song, the three students came back into the class a reported different things about the same song, all of which were not accurate.
Then he decided to get the class to sing one song, with everyone singing to the same song at the same time. While the students were singing, he asked the three students to go a little farther from the classroom. After the second song, he invited the three students back into the class and asked them to report on the song they had just listened to. All three reported accurately.
So, what is the deal here? There are many people out there who think, they can do it on their own, ignoring the fact that their potential customers are getting bombarded with marketing messages from all over the place. The sad thing is that they end up spending a lot of money trying to get the word out, but because they are not in tune with others their messages do not get to the intended recipient. They finally grow tired and quit, even when there is a huge potential for success.
The best survival skill is to learn to play along with others while at the same time acknowledging that there are things that affects us differently from the way they affect others, even those closest to us. Anybody who had done stock trading would tell you “Never fight against the trend, if you plan on winningâ€. Take some time, listen to what people are saying about certain products, research a little to see if there is real demand for the product or service, determine whether people who are talking about it are real buyers and not just people who would want something of great value for almost nothing.
Why am I saying this? A lot of times, people would tell you about what they want, you get it to them, you realize they want it for much less or even worse, you realize that they are actually among the 80% who wants people to talk to them, but have no interest in buying anything. Watch out for those, if you come across one, politely excuse yourself and move on. Otherwise, you will spend 80% of your time and resources selling to non-buyers. Be careful though to distinguish non-buyers from potential buyers who are skeptical about your product.
7 Deliver what is promised on time.
A few months ago, a friend of mine came to me and said “I hear you do computer stuff, My computer is not starting and I would like you to take a lookâ€. I asked him a few questioned and had determined that his problem is likely to be a hardware issue. I told him I would take a look, but at the same time I also told him that I was a software guy and I knew of another guy that did hardware stuff. As soon as I mentioned his name, the guy goes “Nope, I am not going back there, because he takes a long time to get things doneâ€. This had been the second person to say the same about this guy.
Although I was not a customer, It sort of made me hesitant to recommend him to anyone. If they did not get the service they deserved with this guy, it would put my credibility on the line. Now every time somebody asks me where to get their computers fixed, I would say I was not sure or would at least warn them before referring them to him. Who knows how much business he is losing as a result of this? His former customers might be telling their friends to not go there.
Speedy and high quality service has proven to be the key to small business success. Follow up to make sure they are satisfied. This way you show that you are not only interested in getting rid of your product but also care about how they feel about the product. Just do not go overboard and get into how and whether they use the product, that is their business. Keep focused on delivering the best quality products and/or service and make sure they can come back or bring their friends for more. That is your part, the rest is up to them.

Are you disgusted or disappointed with your current web host? Have you switched web hosting companies too many times? Have you thought of hosting your own website(s)? Do you have the ambition to control and manage your own web server?
If you answered 'yes' to the questions above, then you may be ready to host your own sites. This article will give you things to consider while making the switch.
When being your own web host you should be technically inclined and have basic knowledge of operating systems, understand technical terms, understand how to set up a server environment (such as: DNS, IIS, Apache, etc.) have basic knowledge of scripting langauges and databases (PHP, Perl, MySQL, etc.), be familiar with current technologies, and have a basic understanding of hardware and server components.
You should realize the pros & cons. It is one thing to say, you want to host your own web server and it is another thing to actually do it.

There could be many more pros & cons but I've pointed out some of the major ones. Managing a web server starts as a full time job, you must constantly monitor its performance and security. This can sometimes be an exhausting task, especially if you currently have other responsibilities. Though, the control you will have over your website and its performance is rewarding enough. You no longer have to wait for technical support or approval to install a script onto the server. You can have as many websites and databases you want, as long as your hardware can handle it. You no longer have to go into the discussion forums and search for the best web host or rant about how much you hate your current host. You can even begin hosting family & friends personal websites.
Ask yourself, how technically advanced are you? Many times you do not have to be a tech guru or anything of the sort, but you must be very resourceful. You must know how to find resolutions and answers to problems, quickly and efficiently. This means you must be Internet savvy. Not just the average surfer, who surfs aimlessly, but you must be the surfer who can always find what they are looking for. This is key, because with any server environment you are going to run into problems and finding the answers are most accomplished online, using multiple resources, search techniques, and engines. Sure you can hire someone to fix your problems, but as we should have learned from the "web hosting," having someone do it for you isn't always the best option. Here is a test to see if you are ready to find solutions. I need a solution to a Microsoft Windows 2003 Server Event Error - "Event ID: 1056†it's a DHCP Server Error. How would you search? Go ahead find the solution.
Did you first go to Google? If you did, that was a nice effort and common for most, plus a good place to start, but usually it is best to start at the developers' website. In this case "microsoft.com" would have been the first option. Why? Google would more than likely provide you with the answer from Microsoft and other sources, but you don't want to get inaccurate information from other sources. It is common to get information from Microsoft that would not specifically resolve your problem, but the developer should always be your first place to search for the answers. Now search the error again and go to the Microsoft site and find the solution.

What search phrase did you use? It should have been Event ID: 1056, because the Event ID is the exact error, it pinpoints your exact problem without broadening your search. Sometimes the error description is also appropriate to search, just the error description by itself or in combination with the Event ID. It depends on your error, your search feedback, your ability, and technique. For this example I did not include the error description.
Google or Yahoo! should have been your second option (the two largest search engines). Then search other smaller and niche search engines. A good search site which makes use of Google's operator tags is www.soople.com. Next you should search within forums and discussion groups. If you are pretty Internet savvy and have a plentiful or few forums and discussion groups which you frequent then you might actually visit those places before visiting Google or Yahoo!. You can even visit those before visiting the developer site since it is a trusted source, but I wouldn't recommend it, I still would go to the developers' site first. Okay, so now we have planted our feet and have familiarized ourselves with being Internet (search) savvy. We are ready to purchase a server!
When making a server purchase you need to consider a few things before doing so. What to buy? A top of the line, quadruple processor, and super fast turbo server is always ideal, but many times it is not logical or affordable. Therefore, you need to weigh your options (sensibly).
What to buy?
First determine your budget. Be realistic and expect to spend at least $2,500 for a low-end server. For a low-end, quality server with other needed equipment and services I spent a little over $4,500 easily.
Determine your ISP (broadband) provider. Research and speak with several different vendors before deciding which broadband solution best suit your needs. Each provider plan is different and has different benefits, determine the best one which fits your needs. Bandwidth should be put into consideration when choosing your ISP.
A backup device should be purchased before implementing a server install. The backup device should be double the server storage space. This could be a standalone unit like an external hard drive or network storage device or the backup device could be multiple devices such as: backup tapes, disc, etc. The reason the backup device should be larger is because you want to be able to have months worth of backups and not just weekly or monthly backups. You should have at least 24 weeks of backups without the concern of storage space. The backup device or safe deposits should also be external, removable, and portable. This is so the backups can be stored in a remote location. Usually for safe-keeping, in event of a theft or disaster.
Determine your daily traffic goal (the daily traffic which you hope to see within 1 year – be realistic), divide that number by the daily traffic you currently receive, and then multiply that number by 5. That is the total number of GB space you need. Example:
Daily Traffic Goal: 10,000 (Divided by) Current Daily Traffic: 500 (Times X) 5 = 100GB
In the example you should purchase a 100GB Hard Drive, it is best to buy 2 or more drives oppose to 1. In this case, since 50GB drives do not exist or harder to find, you would buy two 60GB drives giving you a total of 120GB. 2 or more drives are usually needed in a server to configure the proper RAID option, in some cases 3 or more are needed. Your backup storage space should be a minimum capacity of 200GB (or 240GB, optional).
Determine your memory. If your web server daily traffic goal is 500,000 then I would recommend at least 2GB worth of memory. If it is a shared server, meaning it also has other server services running on the machine, especially a mail server or database server (which is not recommended) then your memory should at least be 3GB or more. Otherwise, you can think small and upgrade as needed, a 1GB memory stick should be fine for starters.
Determine your network components, which NIC card best performs under high traffic levels and which router best performs for your LAN / web server. It is best to get a router which has a built-in firewall (commonly known as a “hardware firewallâ€). Your ISP may provide you with a router or hardware firewall, this is how they are able to authorize your traffic on their network. Like a cable box does for cable television. The router also shares your IP address with other clients on your network. This enables you to share your Internet connection without having to get a different IP from your ISP. The hardware firewall is simply a router with a built-in firewall, which means it shares your IP address as well as provides added protection to your network. It blocks bad addresses and ports at the forefront, before it can even make it to your computer. It is not recommended to rely only on a hardware firewall for security, this is just the first step. It is recommended to also include a software firewall (firewall software which installs on your computer) and it is recommended to continue timely security practices, such as updating and patching your system on a scheduled routine.
Determine your processor speed and power. Regardless of the amount of traffic you are expecting I would recommend a dual processor or greater. A dual processor or greater is best because if your website unexpectedly take off then you will be well prepared and if you host other server options or websites on the same server then you will have better performance. At the time of this writing the 64-bit platform is the processor direction. 3.8GHz is the most available speed. If your pockets can afford the latest technologies then that is ideal, but keep in mind at this particular time a 64-bit compatible processor is not necessary, without having many applications that require or deliver on that platform. That is a lot of speed going no where fast. Also, remember the power of the 64-bit platform and the greater the processor speed the more heat it produces, therefore it must be cooled much more rapidly and efficiently. At this time a dual 32-bit, 2.8GHz – 3.2GHz processor will suffice (even that is way more than enough). Though, if your pockets can afford it then the latest and greatest would be fine, you will be well prepared. Otherwise, do like most people and upgrade when the time comes.
Make sure you have a CD/RW drive. A floppy disk drive is not needed, but I do recommend it for making system restore disk. The CD/RW drive is needed because you need some type of removable storage device. You never know when you need to install a driver from a different location…like an ethernet driver. An external CD/RW drive is the best option, especially if you have multiple machines.
Choose your operating system carefully. Choose the vendor which you are most comfortable with. Do not choose a MAC if you never used a MAC before. Just because your friend suggests it and says it is a piece of cake does not mean it will be for you. You are trying to get a web server online not re-learn a whole new system. Stay focused and grounded. If you are comfortable with Microsoft then go with Microsoft, regardless if the IT person at your job says Microsoft products are unsecure, Linux or Unix is more secure and much better for a web server. If you have never used Linux or (especially) Unix then you will be in for a ride of your life. Your web server experience will soon become a nightmare and you will have wasted thousands of dollars on equipment. Go with what you know, not what you are told. Each platform has its pros and cons: Microsoft is the user-friendly of them all; Mac is the web/graphic developer of them all; Linux is the open-source/developers paradise of them all; Unix is the most secure of them all. Each of them can be tweaked in ways to provide a solid, quality platform, it is best to stick with what you already know.
You should install on your system all the web services (such as: Apache, IIS, etc.), applications (such as: backup device software, RAID (Array) Manager), scripting langauges (such as: PHP, Perl, etc.), CGI, Database (such as: MySQL, Microsoft SQL, etc.), and a web log analyzer (such as: weblog expert, nihuo, etc.). It is also recommended to perform system updates, security patches, and firewall installs and configurations. It is sometimes best to leave the security installs and configurations for after you have the system functioning properly to avoid any uncalculated problems. This way when you install the firewall and something stops working properly like connecting to your website from outside your network, you can troubleshoot assuming that it is the firewall, therefore you would begin by opening port 80 on the firewall. This method can save you a lot of hassle, but can sometimes be considered the unsecure method, especially if you don't have a hardware firewall already in place.
Next, there are a few things to consider before installing and configuring a server. Where to put it? A secluded, cool location is ideal, but if this cannot be accomplished then adjustments can be made.

Locate a location within your home that is static-free, we do not want to put the server on the carpet, near curtains, or anything else that can produce a static reaction. The reason for this is that you do not want the server internal components to receive a static charge and short circuit.
The location should be a cool environment, preferably below room temperature. The reason for a cool area is because servers (as well as desktop computers) produce large amounts of heat, the more heat it produces the more it needs to cool off. If the server is not kept cool, then this can lead to the server hanging and then eventually crashing. It's the same result of when a car overheats, it stops running. You can keep a server internal components cool by keeping the room cool, additionally you can add more fans to the server which cools the server internal components, you can also position a standalone fan directly at the server back panel and constantly have the fan cool the server internal components. Depending on how cool your room is and how much heat your server produces, getting more fans for your server may be a must and not an option.
It is suggested that the server is at a higher level within your house (mid-floor), because if it is in the basement and a flood occurs it could ruin it. If it is in the attic and the sun beams on the attic for hours the server could overheat. Mid-floor level is usually the cooler place within the home, but these recommendations is optional and you should put the server in the most comfortable and convenient space following the rest of the guidelines.
Be sure the area you choose is not damp or wet (no leaks, moisture, near any liquids, or near a window “especially openâ€). We all know what can happen when electrical components get wet.
The server should sit at least 4†inches from the ground
Be sure a working electrical outlet is near. It is an important to have a power supply, a good brand is APC. Having a power supply can save you from electrical outages, blackouts, and brownouts. Having a power supply helps the server keep its power, remain stable, and unaffected when there is an outage, as well it protects your server against electrical shock. If your outage remains more than 5 minutes it is recommended to begin backing up anything deemed important and shut the computer down voluntarily as well as any other electrical attached devices.
Have a LAN line near and also a phone jack (if you plan on using the server for any dial-up services). It is not recommended to use your web service with a dial-up connection. A broadband connection or greater is recommend for optimal performance. Hosting your own web server is rewarding, useful, and gives you the opportunity to host unlimited websites, databases, services, etc.
If your web traffic becomes too great for your server then it is recommended to choose an offsite web host. It is recommend to purchase a dedicated server with a quality web host. If you choose a server with the above recommendations then your server traffic should be fine for at least up to 25,000,000 page views per month. It could be greater or less depending on your operating system, your server configuration, performance, applications, and services. The point is you should be well in a position to purchase dedicated server space by the time your traffic gets too high, because if you are getting anything close to 1,000,000 page views a month you should have some competitive advertising or ecommerce income. And plus, with the knowledge you will gain from the experience you will be able to support your own server at a dedicated server (remote) location, thus cutting more overhead.
The biggest disadvantage of hosting your own web server is the uptime reliability. If your web server powers down for any reason then your website is offline. Usually web hosting companies have methods and networks to prevent this failure from affecting your website. Usually if the system goes down they have a mirror location where your site is rejuvenated and doesn't experience much downtime. Some web hosts do not practice this method or any other fault tolerance. Imagine if a blackout or power outage occurs, then your web server could be down for hours or even days, this can affect your business greatly. There are some hosting companies who provide mirror web hosting for a small fee, I haven't found one that is reliable yet. Or you could cross your fingers and hope for the best, until you are able to host your server outside your home on a larger network.
Hosting your own server usually is not a money-saving experience. It sometimes cost more to host your own server, when you total the up keep and maintenance. The benefit of hosting your own server is usually a better platform for your customers, because it is no longer a shared server and it gives you the ability to make global changes almost instantaneously. When your customers request more performance or specific applications, then you will be able to implement this immediately. Customers like to know that you are in control. If you tell your customers that the server will be down for maintenance from 6 a.m. – 7 a.m. then it would be best if that is when your server is down, not from 5 a.m. – 10 a.m. You know how your web host will tell you one thing and then you have to try explaining it to your customer. In the end it will benefit you to host your own web server as a web business, this helps you and your customers.
